Junior A Championship result: Glinsk 18 points, Na Piarsaigh 1-14, after extra time in a game played in Pearse Stadium, Galway. Apologies in the delay with the report, as we were busy celebrating until now. Please God the celebrations are not done yet.🍺🏆🥳🎉Before we go into the report, we must mention a spirited and talented Na Piarsaigh team, a club much like our own, on opposite ends of Galway, with a small population doing everything they can to represent their people. Well done to Na Piarsaigh, and no doubt they will have their day. The preparation for the game was far from ideal. We lost kaelan Gunning to a broken hand, and Eamonn Trayers was unable to train for two weeks after injury. Trayers operated at 50%, fitness but you could see how important he was to us during the game. The game started in a fashion that would continue throughout, you score, we score, long periods of keep ball, everyone afraid to make that mistake that could cost them the title. Na Piarsaigh took the lead and were playing well. We knew they were very strong around the middle. We had done our homework and we had prepared well. We came back into the game with a fine Eamon Trayers point and he soon fed Jason Connelly to add another. Sean Dollard was working hard on his debut year, causing plenty of problems and winning frees for the team. Further back the field into our half forward line, when you have the likes of Jason Fannon orchestrating it all, you're never going to be too far away. Eoin Morgan at wing forward was exceptional and worked for the team like no other, whilst also kicking two points. On the other wing Eoin Brennan had a tough job facing up to a very talented and speedy number seven, but Eoin, as he done all year dug in, won breaks and scrapped for the ball. Na Piarsaigh came back into the game after ten minutes and tacked on another few points, and this game had an attritional feel about it. There was never going to be much in it, and so it turned out. Our defence, led by Cormac Trayers at Full back really worked well. Colin Griffin and Shay Mannion in the corner back spots played well , especially considering both are in thier 1st year at adult football. Outside them, Eddie Kilheeney and Ross Heagerty on the wings, both not fully fit, having recovered from injury recently. But both men showed just how important they are to the team with the displays they put in. Fergal Dowd at centre back was a willing runner all day and always available to receive the ball. The game ticked by. Scores were at a premium, but the hard work and effort was clear to see. The large crowd in the stand rose to the occasion, with both sets cheering on their team, and you could see just what it meant to both clubs and both parishes. As the game headed towards half-time, Glinsk were looking at a one-point lead until Morgan Neary kicked a lovely two-pointer to put three between the teams, and three points seemed like a very large lead. Glinsk started the better in the second half. Ronan Coyne was introduced and got stuck into work straight away. Again, scores were at a premium. Na Piarsaigh continued to probe and had some opportunities. A couple of blocks from our defense saved Glinsk, but down the other end Glinsk, too, looked dangerous, with Sean Dollard shooting narrowly wide. In midfield, the pairing Morgan Neary and Gavin Hegarty worked well, and having done our homework on the Na Piarsaigh team, we knew that midfield was a battle we needed to win. We worked tirelessly on the breaking ball over the last number of weeks, and it proved fruitful, with many Glinsk players picking up on the breaking ball. Again Glinsk took a four-point lead going into the closing five minutes of the game. But a long ball into the Glinsk area led to a melee, which eventually led to a Na Piarsaigh penalty. That penalty was dispatched with aplomb and suddenly Glinsk were nervous. Na Piarsaigh levelled the game on the 60th-minute mark, and a minute into injury time, they took the lead for the first time since the 12th minute. Glinsk looked rattled, but they drove up the field, and with Gavin Heagerty driving hard at the defence, as he did all day, winning us a free, and Morgan Neary tapping over to force extra time. The subs benches were emptied, with Glinsk bringing on a number of seasoned campaigners in Kevin Morgan, Kevin kilcommins and Damien Mannion. Fatigue was a factor now, and two periods of ten minutes seemed like an eternity. But Glinsk really seemed to rally in extra time, and players like Eoin Morgan really stood up to the battle, as well as the ever-impressive Eamonn Trayers. Morgan Neary curled over a wonderful two-pointer effort, and Fergal Dowd drove over a 45 from the ground, and again Glinsk looked like they had the game won. But credit to Na Piarsaigh, they battled again and knocked over a disputed two-pointer. The evergreen Jason Fannin then took matters into his own hands , he exchanged hand passes with Gavin Hegarty , drove into space and drilled over from the outside of the right boot to give Glinsk that cushion. Na Piarsaigh scored again, but with the final play of the game, it was the one and only Gavin Heagerty who drove three-quarters of the length of the field before, unfortunately, scuffing his shot. But it mattered not, as the final whistle blew and Glinsk had been crowned county champions. As the players fell to their knees and the fans, their family, their teammates and the people of the community of Glinsk flooded onto the pitch. The raw emotion, the pride and the joy was clear for all to see, and Glinsk had finally won that county final, the first since the great team of 1998. Team captain Cathal Dowd gave a fantastic speech before lifting the trophy to the jubilent support 🔴⚫️🏆GLINSK TEAMC. Dowd (Captain)C. Griffin, C. Trayers, S Mannion, R. Hegarty, F. Dowd (0,1), E.
